The Welsh market town of Conwy, known in England as Conway, lies on the River Conwy in Clwyd. The earliest record of races taking place in this Welsh town was on Tuesday 6th May 1755 when the ‘Historical List of Races’ mentioned the two day meeting. Races took place on Conway Marsh and entries were made at the Bulls Head in Conway. For the two day meeting on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th August 1775 there was a stipulation that certificates of ages of the horses were required before entries could be accepted. The 1776 meeting consisted of a number of matches, while a full programme was offered the next year. At the meeting on Thursday 25th August 1789 the Prince of Wales Plate was a hotly contested event in which Mr R Collins’s Evergreen just got the better of Amadis. The final meeting took place on Saturday 7th September 1793. |
